Complex Energy Systems

This is the opening guest lecture for the Electric Grid Focus Group. Dr. Michael Chertkov of Los Alamos National Lab describes the statistical and mathematical problems arising in complex energy systems, including the electric grid and gas networks. Systems with high penetration of renewable energy …

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials of animal-assisted therapy on psychosocial outcomes

The use of animal-assisted interventions (aaIs) to achieve psychological benefits has expanded rapidly over the last few years. However, this is a vastly under-researched area, and the research to date has been largely descriptive, in the form of case studies, or has used only small groups of partic…

Early transfer of mated females into the maternity unit reduces stress and increases maternal care in farm mink

Mated mammals on farms are typically transferred to another housing environment prior to delivery. We investigated whether the timing of this transfer - EARLY (Day -36), INTERMEDIATE (Day -18), or LATE (Day -3) relative to the expected day of birth (Day 0) - affects maternal stress, maternal care an…

Des exploitations intensives d'huitres pendant l'Antiquite et le Moyen Age sur le littoral atlantique francais: l'exemple de Beauvoir-sur-Mer (Vendee)

…ern villages. In France, archaeological sites where marine shells - in particular oysters - form the majority of consumption refuse, are only rarely excavated. Therefore, the present study about Beauvoir-sur-Mer (Vendee) is rather novel. The site can be characterized as an enormous shell midden 1700*25 m in size and 1-2 m thick. It is dated to between the 7th and 14th centuries AD. Near to the site, a castle was constructed during the 13th century AD. The formation of the shell midden began before, and continued during the castle occupation. For the current analysis, a sample of 5673 shell rema…

Extending the square root method to account for model noise in the ensemble Kalman filter

Presented by Patrick Raanes on 2-18-2015 Abstract:A novel approach to account for model noise in the forecast step of the Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is proposed. The core method is based on the approach of the analysis step of ensemble square root filters (ETKF), and consists in right-multiplying…

Correlated Observation Errors in Data Assimilation

Remote sensing observations often have correlated errors, but the correlations are typically ignored in data assimilation for numerical weather prediction. The assumption of zero correlations is often used with data thinning methods, resulting in a loss of information, and reduction in analysis accu…

Realistic modeling and analysis of synchronization dynamics in power-grid networks

An imperative condition for the functioning of a power-grid network is that its power generators remain synchronized. Disturbances can prompt desynchronization, which is a process that has been involved in large power outages. In this talk I will first give a comparative review of three leading mode…
