Open Source

Open-source distribution is planned. The managed SaaS is available now. This page explains the scope, what will be released, and how it relates to other open projects.

Why open source

  • Academic transparency and reproducibility.
  • Self-hosting when required by policy or cost.
  • Community review, extensions, and long-term sustainability.

Status

Open-source distribution: planned. SaaS: available today.

The open distribution will track the SaaS features as closely as practical; some provider-specific hosting automations may remain SaaS-only.

What will be released?

  • Core web application and UI.
  • App runtime and container launch system (single-port web apps; GUI via embedded VNC/DCV/Xpra in the container).
  • Identity connectors (OIDC/SAML, LDAP) and per-system identity mapping.
  • Compute integration for single VM/host (no scheduler) and Slurm clusters.
  • Data integration for POSIX and S3/object; policy-based job archiving.
  • FAIR publishing components (metadata and DOIs).
  • Documentation, example app templates, and basic CI.

Tapis and SeedMeLab are already open source. OSP integrates with Tapis and is informed by contributions from teams who worked on Hubzero, SeedMeLab, CIPRES, Apache Airavata, and Tapis. Attribution only; no endorsement implied.

Governance & contributions

  • Code will be published in a public repository with an issues tracker and contribution guidelines.
  • We will accept pull requests for bug fixes and well-scoped features aligned with the roadmap.
  • Security reports will use a private disclosure channel before public advisories.

License

The specific license will be announced at release. A permissive OSS license is anticipated.

FAQ

How does the open distribution differ from SaaS?

The open distribution lets you self-host. The SaaS provides hosting, upgrades, monitoring, and security hardening out of the box.

Will features be at parity?

Core features are intended to match. Some managed-hosting automations may remain SaaS-only.
